SWB superheated water boiler

Three-pass pressurised hot water boiler that keeps water liquid above its boiling point in a closed circuit

  • ≤ 12 bar
  • Efficiency 93–94 %

In SWB-series superheated water boilers, water circulates in a closed circuit at temperatures above its boiling point without changing phase. The construction resembles a steam boiler, but the shell runs completely full of water: heat from the burner's combustion chamber passes to the water through large heating surfaces, pumps deliver the superheated water to the process, and after giving up its heat the water returns to the boiler to be reheated. The three-pass combustion chamber, with its large volume and a balanced flue gas flow in the second and third passes, gives high heat transfer and stable combustion.

TSB Energy offers capacities up to 10 000 000 kcal/h (about 11 600 kW) and operating pressures up to 12 bar, with an efficiency of 93–94 %. The boiler fires natural gas, LPG, LNG, diesel and heavy fuel oil and, with a suitable burner, up to 100 % hydrogen, which also makes use of by-product hydrogen from chlor-alkali and electrolysis plants. Its optimised combustion geometry keeps NOx and CO low, and TSB states that the design performance has been confirmed by tests at independent laboratories authorised by the EU.

Design and manufacture follow EN 12953 together with the relevant EN, DIN and TRD rules; for EU projects the system is certified to PED 2014/68/EU, and design to ASME VIII Div. 1 is possible on request. The boiler suits processes that need a steady, controlled temperature above 100 °C but no steam; in industry, superheated water systems typically serve process temperatures of 90–180 °C. Main applications include greenhouses, farms and livestock, chemicals, food, fertiliser, building materials, paper, woodworking and central heating. Conditioning the circuit water and keeping its pH under control is important against corrosion.

Benefits

SWB superheated water boiler

  • Relatively low operating pressure makes maintenance and inspection easy
  • Large corrugated furnace surface for high heat transfer
  • Responds quickly to load changes, as it holds little water that circulates fast
  • Front door that opens either way, with four independently adjustable corner closures for a tight seal
  • Balanced design in thermal expansion zones and approved automatic welding for a long, trouble-free life
  • Fuel consumption up to 4 % lower than with standard designs
  • Turbulators in the smoke tubes raise gas velocity and contact time for better heat transfer
  • Instrumentation to EN 12953 that shuts down and locks the boiler automatically if a limit is exceeded
